Design that listens

Together, we shape spaces that respond — to where you are, and how you live.

I design homes that feel right - thoughtful, considered, and shaped around how you live.

There’s no overcomplication, no push toward more than you need.

Just steady thinking, open conversation, and choices that fit you, your site, and your budget.

I’d love to hear what you’re planning, even if it’s early days

Thinking about a project?

Built and unbuilt, each shaped by place.

A few selected homes — each begins by listening, and grows from what’s already there.

Shoreham

Set into a slope, with timber decks linking indoors and out — shaped for quiet coastal life.

Yackandandah

The house became a platform — bridging the valley, holding the view, working with the land.

Yackandandah

Courtyards between timber pavilions — raised above the land, shaped by the directness of rural forms and the way farm buildings gather over time.

An approach shaped by listening

Most people I work with are building for the first time. It’s a big decision, often wrapped in uncertainty - where to begin, what’s possible, how to navigate the ‘rules’.

My role is to bring clarity to all that. I listen carefully, test ideas early, and help shape a design that’s grounded - in your needs, in the land, and in the way you want to live. There’s no pressure to have all the answers up front. The process is steady, calm, and collaborative - step by step, from first thoughts through to approvals and beyond.

This unfolds through four clear stages:

Gathering

Beginning by learning. About your site, your needs, your ideas. Together we explore how you live now - and how you want to live - while identifying the opportunities and constraints that shape the project.

Imagining

This is where concepts take shape. We explore design directions through sketches and drawings, finding possibilities that reflect your brief and the site’s character.

Developing

Together, we refine the preferred concept. Plans become clearer. Visualisations more resolved. This is the stage where the project’s identity takes hold and details begin to surface.

Refining

The design is translated into technical drawings - ready for approvals, pricing and building. I co-ordinate consultants, resolve key details, handle permitting, and ensure the intent carries through.

Design isn’t just about form or space - it’s about understanding people, places and what really matters.

I can help clarify what’s possible…

A bit about me

I’m Peter Wood, designer and founder of Inspace. I live and work in regional Victoria, designing homes that belong - to their landscape, their climate, and the rhythms of daily life.

Outside of work, I build furniture, paddle when I can, and take time to notice the small things. I bring that same care and calm to the way I design — practical, considered, and shaped by place.

I’ve been doing this for close to 40 years, with a background that spans both design and construction — a Master of Architecture, a Bachelor of Construction Management, and many years working across homes, heritage, and public projects.

Design, for me, is a way of listening. It’s how I help people find direction in a process that can feel uncertain.

From past clients

I loved it straight away. The first sketch and 3D view just made sense—there was no need to see anything else.

Kate - Shoreham

It’s the first time we’ve felt truly understood in what we wanted to create. The design reflects that completely.

Some things worth knowing

Things people often ask.

  • Yes. I’m familiar with many regional councils and can help navigate overlays, planning applications, and bushfire or heritage requirements.

  • It depends on the scope of your project. I usually start with a conversation to understand your needs, then provide a clear outline of services and fees.

  • As early as possible — even before you buy a site or decide on the brief. Early conversations can help avoid false starts.

  • No.

  • It depends on the scope of your project - how long is a piece of string? A simple home might take 3-4 months from brief to documentation, while a more complex project could be 6-8 months. I'll give you realistic timeframes once I understand what you're planning.

  • Yes, I've worked across much of the state - from Apollo Bay to Horsham and places in between. While I'm based in regional Victoria, I'm happy to travel for the right project. Distance just means we might rely more on video calls during the early stages.

Thinking about a project?

Every project starts with a conversation.

I offer a short, obligation-free 15-minute phone or video call — a chance to understand what you're hoping to do, and whether we’re a good fit.

Before we speak, I'll usually send a short guide — outlining how I work and what to expect.

I take on a small number of projects each year, so that each one can be done with care.
